Two bugs on the last nine spots allowed Ryan Fox to return to the peloton at the lucrative world golf championship in Mexico.

Fox finished his opening round on Thursday (Friday NZT) with a 72 on the challenging and technical course.

At the end of his round, he was 39th tied for nine points.

Fox, fresh out of his decisive victory in the World Super 6 Match Play in Perth last weekend, managed to make two birdies in the group of nine in ninth place in front of the Golf Chapultepec club.

But he dropped a shot on the normal four eighth to be one under the head in the last nine.

A lack of preparation did not help Fox. He received a late call for the tournament and arrived in Mexico later than the majority of players.

Fox could not score any holes in the ninth and scored a two-par (holes 11 and 15) bug to finish one down and down the leaderboard. He was tied for the ninth time earlier in his round.
