Sabers hire Mike Bales as goaltending coach

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) – The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that Mike Bales has resigned from his goalie coaching position. WGR Sports Radio 550 confirmed that Bales would be the new Sabers goaltending coach, replacing Andrew Allen. Joe Yerdon was the first to point this out.

Bales has spent two seasons coaching Hurricanes goalkeepers. Petr Mrazek and Curtis McElhinney did not have an excellent regular season number, but Carolina qualified for the playoffs and reached the Eastern Conference finals.

Bales could not help goaltender Scott Darling from Chicago and he will likely be redeemed.

Bales worked with Jason Botterill in Pittsburgh and helped Matt Murray secure two rounds of the Stanley Cup.

Bales has never played with the Sabers, but he had a brief stay in Rochester.

Allen was hired in 2015 to coach Sabers goalies. Robin Lehner had good years in his first two seasons, but the last two seasons have not been good for the Sabers goalies.

More than a month ago, we reported that all coaching staff, with the exception of Steve Smith, had been informed that it was possible to look for another job.
