Sacha Baron Cohen has revealed he created Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm to warn American voters of the “ dangers ” of voting President Donald Trump for a second term.

The actor, 49, spoke about the documentary with The Sun on Saturday, saying he felt democracy was ‘at a very dangerous point’ under the Trump administration and wanted to do something before the election November.

He explained, “The purpose of the film is to deliver a message. That’s the reason Borat came out when he did.

“ I thought the thing I could do to warn people was use my funniest character, my most popular character, to show what I thought were the dangers of voting for Trump. I felt that democracy was at a very dangerous point.

“ I guess with this movie I felt I had to be able to look at myself in the mirror [the day after election day] and say to myself: “I have done all I can to protect a political system that I love – democracy”. ‘

Late last year, Ash revived this year’s beloved Borat character Subsequent Moviefilm, the sequel to Borat from 2006.

He plays a goofy Kazakh journalist who travels to America to learn about their culture in hilarious and sometimes incredible mock-documentaries.

And after shooting the movie, the outspoken actor admitted there had been a few moments where he feared for his safety.

In an Instagram post in October, Sacha shared a behind-the-scenes video of himself performing at a Trump rally as Borat.

The crowd quickly realized that he was laughing at them before turning angrily on him, forcing Sacha to flee the scene, before barricading himself in his trailer and leaving.

“ It wasn’t the easiest movie to make, ” he captioned the terrifying video.

Another clip from the film quickly went viral as it showed an embarrassing moment involving Trump’s surrogate Rudy Giuliani.

Borat’s daughter Tutar, played by Maria Bakalova, was interviewing Giuliani for a segment – which he assumed to be a real interview – at a hotel.

During this footage, he can be seen lying on a bed and resting his hand on his pants as ‘Tutar’ adjusted his mic – he says, because he was just fixing his shirt.

“The Borat video is a complete fabrication. I was putting my shirt away after removing the recording equipment, ” Giuliani said on Twitter.

In a recent interview with Variety, Cohen said he hoped his film would persuade people to vote against Trump in the 2020 election.

“ I don’t mean to selfishly suggest that people would watch Borat and vote for Trump, but that was the point, ” he said.
