The British comedian and writer won the award for best actor in a comedy or musical for the sequel Next movie Borat, and joked that the film “could not have been possible” without Donald Trump’s personal lawyer.
“This movie wouldn’t have been possible without my co-star,” Cohen began. “A fresh new talent that came out of nowhere and turned out to be a comedy genius. I’m talking, of course, of Rudy Giuliani.
Giuliani was an unsuspecting participant in the sequel, having agreed to an interview with Tutar (Maria Bakalova), Borat’s teenage daughter. After the interview was over, the pair retired for a drink in Giuliani’s hotel room, where the lawyer and former New York mayor appeared to be adjusting in Tutar’s company.
Giuliani would later accuse Borat creator Sacha Baron Cohen of being a “rock cold liar” for suggesting the scene showed something other than him just “tucking in his shirt”.
“Who could make the most of a single decompression?” Cohen added in his speech on the Globes. “Unbelievable. Our movie was just the beginning for him. Rudy went on to star in a series of comedy films. Hits like Four seasons landscaping, Hair dye another day and the drama of the courtroom, A very public fart. “
Cohen was referring to a series of public performances involving Giuliani earlier this year, including a press conference that took place in the parking lot of a landscaping company.
In a second acceptance speech, for Borat’s sequel winning Best Picture (Comedy or Musical), Cohen also thanked the bodyguard he worked with on the film. He said the unidentified person had prevented him “from being shot twice” during the filming.
