GRANITE BAY (CBS13) – About 100 people attended a New Years Eve party in Granite Bay despite an ongoing regional stay-at-home order, a spokesperson for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Sunday.
Spokeswoman Angela Musallam said MPs responded to a noise complaint Thursday evening at a Vista De Lago Court mansion in the gated community of Los Lagos, near Lake Folsom. Musallam said no complaints were made and MPs left once the volume turned down.
Videos circulating on social media show that the number of people who attended the party could be much higher.
“The more things like this happen, it means we have to stay closed for a long time to try and limit transmissions,” said Dr. Dean Blumberg. “These types of events are harmful to the health of people and to the economy.”
Placer County is in the Greater Sacramento area, which remains under a regional stay-at-home order due to a region-wide decline in intensive care capacity as coronavirus cases continue to climb.
The region came under the order three weeks ago, with ICU capacity falling below 15%, and the order was to be in effect for three weeks if that number improved. However, Saturday’s screenings have prompted officials to keep the order in place for now, as an expected surge is expected resulting from the holidays.
Dr Blumberg, an infectious disease specialist at UC Davis, believes the implications of the celebration could have far-reaching impact.
“If there are over 100 people there we know the transmission rate is relatively high, we know that at least five or ten of them may have transmitted,” Blumberg said.
“People have to start making better choices. Personally, I wouldn’t have gone to a party with 10 people, ”said Rhonda Williams, a Placer County resident.
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg took to Twitter to criticize the party on Monday.

Sacramento social media influencer Zayn Silmi apologized on Monday for going to the party after being spotted in videos online.

The state saw an increase in cases and deaths just two weeks after Thanksgiving. Based on the University of Washington projection models, we could see an almost 19% increase in cases and almost 24% in deaths by January 14.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the numbers tripled then what they are now because people just don’t want to take it seriously enough, I guess,” said Joey Montero.
Placer County Public Health is now advising people who went to the party or gathered on New Years Eve to get tested and stay home.
“It’s unfortunate because it’s going to affect a lot of people, but it is and we can’t really change what’s happened,” said Williams.
Placer County Acting Health Officer Dr Rob Oldham made the following statement about the event:
“Public health has been informed of this event. With this and any other gathering that may have taken place during the holidays, we encourage attendees to get tested and to stay home and away from others as much as possible.
If a person who attended a large gathering were to test positive and were considered contagious during the period of time, the contact tracing would attempt to identify a list of close contacts and a notification would be made. Contact tracing is more difficult if contacts are distributed geographically, and may also be hampered by willingness to participate with a high level of community transmission. ”
