Police responded to Juliesse Avenue in the state capital of California around 6:30 p.m. after receiving reports of vehicles being driven recklessly in the area, the statement said. When officers arrived, they found a large group gathered in a warehouse for a boxing event.
At around 8 p.m., a patrol sergeant, who had remained in the area, saw people fleeing the building, police said. One person told the sergeant that someone had a gun and several shots were then heard, police said.
The sergeant ran at the sound of the gunshots and confronted an armed suspect who allegedly pointed a gun at a crowd of people inside the building. The sergeant then shot and killed the person, police said.
The suspect was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died in hospital, police said.
Police said they found a second gunshot victim as they roamed the scene. This victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and police are still investigating how and when the victim was shot.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the person who was killed, pending notification from the next of kin.
The Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs Division of the Sacramento Police Department are investigating the incident under the supervision of the Public Safety Accountability Office and the Sacramento County Attorney’s Office. Video associated with the incident is being collected by detectives and will be made public within 30 days, police said.
