Saga is finally coming back, thank goodness

It’s been over three years since Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples announced that a) they’ve hit halfway through their hilarious, violent, ever-changing comic book series. Saga, and, b) they put the series on hold for the foregroundforeseeable future, but not until you’ve killed another beloved character, because that’s just How? ‘Or’ What Saga Rollers.

Well, the foreseeable future is finally here, as Vaughan and Staples announced today at New York Comic-Con that “Compendium Two” of their sci-fi epic is finally in the works. Through Polygon, details are not available on an official return date for now, but the series should be back in comic book stores sometime in 2022.

Saga, for the ignorant, tells the story of Alana and Marko, two soldiers from worlds at war who surprise each other, and surprise everyone, falling madly in love with each other, despite their ideologies, biologies, etc. incompatible. family ties and lots of guys with TV screens for bosses. Along the way, he achieved a balance of tenderness, gore, and humor that will be familiar to fans of Vaughan’s work. Amazon’s adaptation of its long-running superhero comic Invincible.

Behind that hazy theatrical blanket of costumed Alana, choosing a wedgie on the open circuit set which is her current workplace, awaits a full-page close-up of a gray robotic vagina pushing a tiny TV-headed baby, accompanied text from a doctor shouting: “One last helping hand!” The visual that high school health students have looked away for years is pasted on the front page of one of the most critically acclaimed and successful creator-owned series of the past decade, and this fearlessness is a big part of why Saga reached such a level of acclaim in just over two years.
