Saginaw Grant, a prolific Native American actor and hereditary chief of the Sac & Fox Nation of Oklahoma, has died aged 85.

Grant has had a prolific career with numerous television roles and film appearances including The Lone Ranger and The World’s Fastest Indian.

The actor died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes on Wednesday at a private healthcare facility in Hollywood, Calif., Said Lani Carmichael, a publicist and longtime friend of Grant’s.

“He loved both Oklahoma and LA,” Carmichael said. “He made his home here as an actor, but he never forgot his roots in Oklahoma. He remained a fan of the nation earlier.

News of his death was also shared in a post on his Facebook page.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce that a warrior has been called home,” the post began. “Saginaw Morgan Grant, the hereditary chief and medicine man of the Sac & Fox tribe, has traveled the world talking about their traditions, experiences, sobriety, and faith as a Native American and Christian.”

Grant’s most prominent role on television was a recurring role from 1993 to 1994 in Harts Of The West, starring Beau Bridges and his father Lloyd Bridges.

He also played a man selling a truck to Bryan Cranston’s Walter White in the 2013 episode Ozymandias of Breaking Bad, which went on to become one of the most acclaimed episodes of the iconic crime series.

Grant was also at home in crowd-pleasing shows on major networks – with appearances on Baywatch, Nash Bridges, My Name Is Earl and Saving Grace – and acclaimed high-profile shows on cable networks, most notably American. Horror Story, Baskets, The League, Shameless and Veep.

The actor has worked with Anthony Hopkins twice, first in his 2005 film The Fastest Indian in the World, and then again in 2007 on Slipstream, which Hopkins wrote and directed in addition to playing.

Born July 20, 1936 in Pawnee, Oklahoma, Grant was a veteran of the US Marine Corps.

He began acting in the early 1980s in commercials, before moving on to film and television roles later in the decade.

Grant has been active in the California powwow circuit for years and has traveled around the world speaking to people about Native American culture, Carmichael added.

“Her motto in life has always been to respect each other and not to talk about each other in a negative way,” she said.

Grant was also active in the Native American veterans community and for years participated in the National Native American Veterans Gathering, said Joseph Podlasek, the event’s organizer.

“He thought it was important that the Aboriginals be recognized as veterans,” Podlasek said. “He was kind and gentle, and very humble.

A memorial for Grant will be held in the Los Angeles area, but details have yet to be finalized, Carmichael said.

He is survived by his daughter Lisa, as well as his grandchildren Cassandra, Vanessa and Della, his great-grandchildren Joseph, Sherry Jo, Stephen and Micah Little Crow, and his brothers Austin and Francis
