Sahraa Karimi launches plea to film community as Taliban take control – deadline

Sahraa Karimi, the Afghan filmmaker and managing director of the national cinema company Afghan Film, called for support from film communities around the world as her country falls into the hands of the Taliban insurgency.

The Taliban effectively took control of Afghanistan on Sunday after seizing the capital Kabul, toppling the current government, with President Ashraf Ghani fleeing the country. The United States evacuated embassy staff and troops were dispatched in an attempt to take control of Kabul airport to help evacuate thousands more fleeing the new regime.

Karimi posted a statement on Twitter addressing “every film community in the world.”

“I write to you with a broken heart and a deep hope that you can join me in protecting my beautiful people, especially the filmmakers, from the Taliban… They slaughtered our people, they kidnapped many children, they sold girls as wives to their men, ”she wrote.

“It’s a humanitarian crisis, and yet the world is silent… They will ban all art. Me and other filmmakers could be next on their hit list, ”Karimi warned. You can see the full statement further down this page.

Indian filmmaker Leena Manimekalai, North Irish director Mark Cousins, Indian director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri and Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap have shown their support on Twitter for Karimi.

Sahraa Karimi posted further updates over the weekend, including sharing footage of disturbing scenes at Kabul airport where thousands appear to be stranded as they attempt to flee the Taliban. At least five people were killed at the airport as they desperately searched for an emergency exit, Reuters said.

Karimi is the first and only woman in Afghanistan to hold a doctorate in cinema. His credits include Hava, Maryam, Ayesha which was screened in Venice in 2019.
