A US Navy killed in suicide bombings at Kabul airport during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan was commemorated in his country on Saturday.
The coffin of Lance Cpl. Kareem Grant Nikoui, one of 13 U.S. servicemen killed in the blasts, was accommodated in Riverside, Calif., For family and those who wished to honor his services.

Hundreds of people attended the memorial service at the Harvest Christian Fellowship for the 20-year-old Navy who died in efforts to evacuate Americans and Afghans from Kabul on August 26, amid the rapid Taliban takeover of the war-torn country.
The attack also claimed the lives of 10 other Marines, a member of the US Navy, a US Army soldier and more than 100 Afghans. Another of the fallen Marines – Cpl. Hunter Lopez – was also from Riverside.
Other servicemen, heartbroken friends and family lined up for the opportunity to honor Nikoui’s life, placing their hands on the flag-draped coffin.

Nikoui’s sister, Shyler Chappell, spoke during Saturday’s service, saying she learned that in her brother’s dying moments, he had returned inside Kabul airport in an attempt to save three families, according to KTLA.
“It didn’t surprise me that these were his last moments, as he had sent our family group chat videos of him talking to the kids there,” she said.
Thousands of people gathered on the streets of Norco on Friday as Nikoui’s coffin was transported from Ontario International Airport to Crestlawn Mortuary in Riverside, local reports said.
