The St. Louis area is bringing back a mask warrant for all as the number of Covid-19 cases in Missouri continues to rise amid a more communicable variant, officials said.
The city and county of St. Louis will require the wearing of masks by the vaccinated and unvaccinated in indoor public places from Monday, the mayor’s office said.
It is at least the second major county in the United States to revert to a general mask requirement, as the delta variant is leading to an increase in cases nationwide.
Los Angeles County, the most populous in the United States, reinstated an indoor mask requirement last week.
“We have lost more than 500 residents of Saint-Louis to COVID-19, and if our region does not work together to protect each other, we could see peaks overwhelm our hospitals and public health systems.” Dr. Fredrick Echols said in a statement.
St. Louis County is the most populous county in Missouri. The city and county enacted a mask mandate in July 2020 that was lifted in May after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said people vaccinated could stop wearing masks in many settings.
A few days ago, the city and county sounded the alarm on what authorities called a sharp increase in cases, saying new daily cases were up more than 30% from the previous week. .
Greene County has also seen an increase in cases, and Governor Mike Parson this week led “ambulance strike teams” in Springfield to support the health care system.
The most transmissible delta variant is now the dominant form in the United States and accounts for 83% of new cases of Covid-19 in the country, the CDC director said on Tuesday.
