Carson, Calif. – After suffering a sloppy first half including an interception near the goal line and going to a 81-yard touchdown, the New Orleans Saints rallied in the second half to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers 19-17 Sunday. Dignity Health Sports Park.
The Saints (1-1) won the Wil Lutz kicker match on a 28-yard run in 1:05. The defense ensured the match with interception by linebacker Colton Jumper of the Chargers quarterback, Easton Stick, 32 seconds from the end.
Quarterback Taysom Hill led the way through the second pre-season game, connecting touchdown passes to Austin Carr (27 meters) and Devine Ozigbo (1-meter), while maintaining several live commands with his legs. He finished 11th out of 15 for 136 yards and ran five times for 53 yards, the team's best result.
The Saints followed at 17-3 at half-time through several mediocre games, including an 81-yard punt return by Troymaine Pope with three seconds left in the half.
Quarterback Saints Teddy Bridgewater, who started off against Drew Brees at rest, was eliminated on the 2-yard line when the ball went into the hands of offensive midfielder Dwayne Washington. Los Angeles (0-2) converted their first two assists, including one on a dubious penalty against cornerback Ken Crawley, en route to a 24-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Cardale Jones to Andre Patton, with a remaining at 5:32 the half.
The Saints had an excellent field position for most of the first half, but had only managed a 33-yard Lutz goal. These points were put in place by an interception of the linebacker of Saints A.J. Klein.
The defensive wing of the Saints, Trey Hendrickson, was a force in the first half, imposing three possession penalties on the Chargers.
Bridgewater had a hard half, missing two receivers open and being almost intercepted two more passes.
In addition to Brees, star defensive team Cameron Jordan, star catcher Michael Thomas and left tackle Terron Armstead did not play. Running back Alvin Kamara wore four times for 15 yards. The Chargers did not face quarterback star Philip Rivers and several other starters.
The players of both teams struggled to stay on their feet as the peloton was beaten since the MLS it hosted Saturday night.
After a week of training in New Orleans, the Saints will travel to New York Friday before Saturday's game against the Jets at MetLife Stadium.
