Carlos Sainz Jnr set the best time of all the drivers in pre-season testing on the morning of the sixth day on the circuit of Catalunya.
The McLaren driver set a record of 1'17,144, three hundredths of a second shorter than the best time recorded in last year's pre-season test on the same circuit.
Sainz was one second ahead of the fastest driver, Sebastian Vettel, whose morning ended early when he crashed. Vettel had just started running in his SF90 when he went straight to the third corner with a suspected mechanical problem and made a slight contact with the barrier.
The session was flagged with the red flag for over half an hour until Vettel's car was recovered. The Ferrari has not come back since and the team said it would not be ready to run again later in the afternoon.
The top trio provoked each of the three red flags of the morning. In addition to the fall of Vettel, Sainz stopped on the track shortly after signing a record time, and Max Verstappen also stopped at the exit of the pit lane.
In addition to McLaren, Williams was the only other team to improve his best time trial so far this morning. Robert Kubica set a record of 1'19.367, placing FW42 in eighth place.
Most of the teams were close to the pace they had previously and focused on increasing their mileage, despite the disruption of the morning race. Verstappen, Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo all traveled more than one race during the first four hours of racing.
