Sakurai addresses high volume of sword fighters in Smash (again), reminds fans that’s not his call

Later today Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Director Masahiro Sakurai will introduce the new DLC fighters. This time it’s Pyra and Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and they happen to be another group of sword users.

Prior to this show, Sakurai appeared on the last episode of Washa Live and took the opportunity to remind everyone that the decision to add fighters to the sword was not up to him. Here’s what he had to say, courtesy of a Nintendo Everything translation:

“Sword fighters…? Hey, that’s what it is!… Like it or not, it’s not for me to decide if another sword fighter comes into the game. “

“even if it’s another sword fighter, it will be fine as long as we balance them properly … and on the other hand [to fighters like Steve] sword fighters are easy [to implement]. “

Who draws the blows then? Sakurai expanded on this topic last February, explaining how his own “preferences” don’t play a role in the fighter selection process and noting how Nintendo had a “wider” word in decision-making:

“My preferences don’t play a role in adding new fighters; Nintendo has a bigger say in that decision and brings their thoughts to the table … The fighters we include in Smash Bros. tend to come from series that have stories. For example, Dragon quest“Hero”, “Banjo & Kazooie” and Fatal furyTerry Bogard first appeared about 20-30 years ago – I want to include a wide range of characters. “

In his last discussion on the fighter selection process, he also warned everyone that he could be in trouble for saying too much:

“I’m sure if I take it a step further, I’ll get something from Nintendo…”

The next Smash Bros. presentation will take place again today (2:00 p.m. GMT / 3:00 p.m. CET / 6:00 a.m. PT / 9:00 a.m. ET). It will run “about 35 minutes” and present an in-depth look at the new two-in-one fighter. Nintendo revealed yesterday that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate version 11.0.0 is also coming soon.
