Sakurai Explains Why Xenoblade’s Rex Isn’t An Ultimate Smash DLC Fighter

Over the past week Super Smash Bros. Ultimate presentation, Sakurai explained how the team envisioned having Xenoblade Chronicles 2Rex’s protagonist fights alongside Pyra and Mythra, but that just wasn’t possible due to the limitations of the game.

Sakurai has now expanded on this in his latest Famitsu column, once again explaining how the team’s idea (of two different fighters at the same time) was sidelined due to technical hurdles. Ultimately, it was decided that the fighter would transform into two similar but different characters.

Here’s the full translation, courtesy of Ryokutya2089 (via Siliconera):

“When it was decided that we should create a character from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, the very first thing I thought of was showing and moving Rex and Pyra at the same time on the screen. But the conclusion that it is impossible came at match speed. I kind of asked the team to inspect it, but it was impossible.

“When we talk about 2 people traveling in a single group, there are the Ice Climbers. They look the same and can only do the same things. When we tried Rex + Pyra it was clear that we couldn’t do an essential task to have their [data] the capacity exceeds a processing load threshold. “

“The system of having Rex as the main fighter and Pyra overseeing him was also determined to be difficult. The design was so complex that a lot of things had to be done. “

“Rex should be moved on his own. But then I thought it would be better if we could switch between Pyra and Mythra.

So that’s why Rex didn’t make the cut as a DLC fighter. At least he was able to feature in the final smash scene for the New Fighter DLC. What do you think of the latest two-in-one character? Did you hope Rex would be a playable character? Share your thoughts below.
