Salesforce announced on Tuesday that its employees will have the option to work remotely full-time, although it is safe to return to the office.
The new guidelines, which Salesforce calls “Work from Anywhere,” give employees three different options for how they will work in the future: flexible, fully remote, and in the office. Salesforce said the decision to offer new ways of working was based on employee welfare surveys the company had sent out since the start of the pandemic.
For employees who work with the “flex” option, they will be in the office one to three days a week for the more difficult tasks to perform during video calls, such as team collaboration, client meetings or the presentations. Salesforce said most of its employees around the world will have flexible hours.
Other employees will work entirely remotely – Salesforce said this option would be reserved for those who do not live near one of the company’s offices or who work in roles that do not require being in a physical office.
Salesforce said only a small subset of its 49,000 employees would work in the office four to five days a week.

Salesforce expects the new options to help improve equality and diversity within the company – since workers won’t be required to show up to an office in places like San Francisco or New York, Salesforce may expand recruiting to new locations.
A change in how employees work will also mean a change in the physical Salesforce offices. Salesforce has 19 offices in North America alone, including the recently completed Salesforce Tower in San Francisco, a 1,070-foot-tall skyscraper that cost $ 1.1 billion to build. Hyder wrote that in the future, offices will be redesigned as “community hubs” with collaboration and small group spaces instead of rows of desks.
Hyder did not specify when employees might expect to return to the office, but noted that “careful management of the spread of COVID-19 will remain essential for most of the year.” The company will also put in place rules such as temperature checks before entering the building, face coverings, deep cleaning, manual contact tracing and home welfare statements.
Salesforce first told employees they could work from home until August 2021. But like many other tech companies, its plans appear to have changed in the months since. Last year, as the company slowly began to reopen its 160 offices around the world, it created a more “sterile” and “hospital-like” environment, removing light touches like knick-knacks on desks and “d ‘Huge gum bear pots everywhere,’ CEO Marc Benioff told the New York Times in June.
And at the start of the pandemic, Salesforce offered a 21-page manual, accessible to anyone who wanted, on how to safely reopen office spaces. The plan called for rethinking some of the materials inside the office, adding glass partitions, and making social distancing mandatory, even in elevators.
