Heavy haze fell over northern Utah on Friday morning as winds shifted and brought wildfire smoke from Oregon and northern California. The air quality is as bad as the worst inversion conditions found during the winter in northern Utah.

Salt Lake City and Denver, which are also affected by smoke outside the state, are the only two U.S. cities ranked in the 20 most polluted areas.

The Salt Lake County Department of Health has published tips for improving air quality under current conditions:

  1. Keep windows and doors closed
  2. Limit the use of a swampy cooler
  3. Close the fresh air intake vent on window AC units
  4. Avoid adding to poor air quality by burning
  5. Consider buying an indoor air purifier
  6. Postpone house cleaning
  7. Avoid being too active
  8. Use N95 masks
