FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – A new coach, reigning champion and second-year quarterback have brought hope to the Jets this season. But a week later, this optimism quickly declined.

Sam Darnold has mononucleosis and will not play Monday night against the Cleveland Browns (0-1), Coach Adam Gase announced Thursday. There is no time for his return.

Darnold had been diagnosed with strep throat Tuesday night, but other tests revealed that he was mono. Trevor Siemian, who signed a one-year contract with the Jets in March, will start in his place Monday night.

"Every time you lose your quarterback, it's a big problem," he said. Dowell Loggains, the offensive coordinator and the quarterback coach of the team. "It's the mentality of a next man. Trevor spent the entire off season. We are excited for him. "

Siemian, 27, did not play in a N.F.L. Regular season game since December 14, 2017. He is 13-11 with 30 touchdowns and 24 steals in 24 career starts, all with the Denver Broncos.

"I went there and I did it a bit," Siemian said. "It's been a long time, so like I said, I want to compete and hang out with guys, I feel comfortable."

Monday's clash marks the start of a tough series for the Jets. After Cleveland, the Jets will travel to Foxborough, Mass., To face the Patriots in the third week, followed by a week off. They will then play the Philadelphia Eagles before coming back for home games against the Dallas Cowboys and the Patriots.

An early eruption of wounds has only made things more difficult. The star of the race, Le'Veon Bell, did not play Thursday because of a shoulder injury, but he announced by Twitter that a magnetic resonance imaging examination had shown that his shoulder was in good condition. Demaryius Thomas, acquired Monday in an exchange with the Patriots, is hamstring injury and will train only Saturday. Linebacker C.J. Mosley, defense leader, left the game on Sunday due to an injury to the groin. Defensive end rookie Quinnen Williams, who was drafted in third, was injured in the ankle. No player has practiced this week.

"It's a lot of adversity at first, but it will bring us together as a group, as a staff, as an organization," said Jamal Adams, safety manager. "There is no better way to do it than Monday night."

"We recruited Trevor especially because of his 24 career debut and his record," said Gase. "He has a lot of experience, he has been in a lot of ball clubs. He has the respect of the cloakroom.

Gase said he had talked about Darnold to the rest of the team at a meeting on Thursday morning. Darnold's locker remained intact after training, his jersey was tidy alongside the rest of his belongings, as it will remain for the foreseeable future.
