Singer Sam Smith on Friday announced to the world that he preferred to be called solely by neutral pronouns.

In a long Instagram post Friday, the British singer-songwriter asks fans to help him "embrace who I am" using the pronouns "them" and "them" in reference to him.

"I decided to change my pronouns into THEY / THEM after a life of war with my gender, I decided to embrace for what I am, internally and externally," begins the message. from Smith. "I am so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people who support me in this decision, but I am very anxious to announce it because I care too much about what people think but f ** k I understand that there will be a lot of mistakes and misunderstandings but all I'm asking you is that you try it … I hope you can see me as I see myself now.

Smith adds that he does not yet understand what it means to live as a "non-binary" person and that he will learn with time.

"I'm not yet at the stadium to talk long and eloquently about what it means to be non-binary but I can not wait for the day I am," Smith said. "So, for the moment, I just want to be visible and open, if you have questions and wonder what all this means, I'll do my best to explain, but I also tagged below the human beings who fight every day for good fighting are activists and leaders of the non-binary / trans community who have helped me and have given me so much clarity and understanding. "

As noted by HuffPost, Smith has announced this move regarding his gender identity in recent months. In March, he told Jameela Jamil that he had begun to question his identity after hearing the experiences of sexist and non-binary people.

"When I saw the non-binary genderqueer and read, and I heard these people talking, I thought," F ** k, that's me "Smith said at the time." Not binary is that you do not identify with a sex – you are just you. You are a mix of all kinds of things. You are your own special creation. This is how I suppose that I am neither a man nor a woman. I think I'm floating somewhere in between. All on the spectrum ".

More recently, Smith began bringing his new identity to a higher level by wearing heels on the red carpet for the GQ Men Awards of the year 2019 last week.

"Tonight I was wearing heels for the first time at an awards ceremony," Smith said in another post posted on Instagram. "I just got home after a wonderful evening and as I headed for the front door, I stopped and listened to my heels slamming against the floor, and I just says 'F *** YES' I thought I could never be myself like that in front of the industry or everybody.I feel so good and I just wanted to share that with all of you and share a picture of my GORJ Gucci heels, I will always be my virgin heels.
