Singer-songwriter Sam Smith, recipient of a Grammy Award, now wants to be referred by the pronouns "they / they".
"After a life of war with my kind, I decided to embrace myself for what I am, internally and externally," Smith wrote in a post posted on Instagram. "I understand that there will be a lot of mistakes and misinterpretations, but all I ask is that you try it out." I hope you can see me as I see myself now.
The announcement of Smith's pronoun comes six months after Smith appeared as a non-binary genre in the Instagram show of actor Jameela Jamil, "I Weigh Interviews".
"I am neither a man nor a woman. I think I'm floating between the two, "Smith said in March.
While many non-binary and gender-neutral people prefer neutral pronouns, such as "them" and "them," Smith continued to use male pronouns at that time. However, all that changed on Friday.
"I'm not yet at the stadium to talk long and eloquently about what it means to be non-binary, but I can not wait to see where I am," wrote Smith in this article, which had more than 360 000 Friday afternoon. Instagram likes. "So, for now, I just want to be visible and open."
Although Smith explicitly started identifying as non-binary at the beginning of the year, the artist had previously spoken of an identity lacking gender identity. In an interview with the Sunday Times in October 2017, Smith said, "I do not know what the title would be, but I feel as much woman as man."
In his conversation with Jamil earlier this year, Smith stated that they were gay at the age of 10 and that they no longer wore male clothing at the age of 16 , adding that they would wear makeup and fur at school.
"I've always been very free to think about my sexuality, so I'm just trying to change that into my thoughts on gender," Smith told Jamil.
Although Smith is probably the most famous celebrity to identify as non-binary, they are not the only ones. The star of "Billions" Asia Kate Dillon, the creator of "Transparent" Jill Soloway and the candidate of "RuPaul & # 39; s Drag Race" Valentina also identify as non-binary.
