The Auburn University gymnast, injured in the leg by a video that turned into viral state, opened Monday when she knew that "something was wrong" not good."
In her first interview since her two knees, Samantha Cerio told the "Today" show that the reality of her injuries did not immediately hit her.
"When I landed, I felt like something was wrong and I thought I had hyperextended my knees until I looked down, that was not the case "Said Cerio.
"That's when I saw what happened and the pain started to settle in," said Cerio. "It was a big one," Oh shoot, what happened? "
Footage filmed at the stomach showed the 22-year-old freefall early in the month during a ground-training session at the NCAA regional competition in Baton Rouge.
The injury occurred while Cerio was attempting a double spring rollover with a blind landing.
Cerio – who appeared in "Today" in a wheelchair – said that the takeover of the video on the Internet had forced him to relive the accident.
"When you see something like this, you want to watch it just to see what's going on because you're curious about it," said Cerio. "But at the same time, you do not think of people that it could have an impact."
The gymnast has since announced her retirement from the sport. Cerio said that she did not know that routine would be her last.
"I did not think something was wrong," Cerio said. "There is just a lot of energy in the arena. Everything seemed normal. "
But while she is now forced to give up her gymnastics career, the college dean said she was committed to following up on other projects after graduation, including walking down his marriage in June.
"I know I will do everything I can to make it happen," she said. "My fiance helps me do everything I need to help me live things everyday. We will work hard for that. "
