Sammy’s successful comeback: the Caps beat the Devils 3-2

The Washington Capitals took a step forward in terms of good play and looked to continue down that path as they faced the New Jersey Devils for the second time in two days. Could they complete the weekend sweep?

Mikhail Maltsev opened the scoring with a twist that went from Dmitry Orlov’s stick past Ilya Samsonov on the short side. Jakub Vrana scored in two straight away after shooting at home his own rebound to tie the game to one. Nicklas Backstrom looking for his 700th career assist found the back of the net instead with his own shot. Yegor Sharangovich passed one through Samsonov’s body to tie the game up once more.

Alex Ovechkin ranted an incredulous MacKenzie Blackwood to restore the Caps lead and ended the game winning.

The Caps beat the Devils 3-2!

  • Aside from the elusive and ill-fated goal from the Devils, I thought the Caps had dominated this period and were probably unlucky not to come out with three more goals like they did yesterday. I was particularly impressed with the start of the Dmitry Orlov and Justin schultz pairing as these two are really pushing the pace offensively from the backend and seem to have found some great chemistry.
  • The birthday boy! Jakub vrana shown Peter Laviolette that he shouldn’t bench him potting his second in two games to get the Caps on the board. Happy 25 to Snek.
  • Not a ton of score in the first frame, so I’m going to use this chip to tell you Disney Plus subscribers that you have to watch WandaVision because this show is super awesome and the Season 1 finale is just a few days away. (March 5).
  • The second was another period that I thought the Caps made the most of. A much slower pace than the first with a lot more whistles, but they continued the tendency to give New Jersey nothing in terms of near and high danger opportunities. In 40 minutes, the Devils have registered just one such chance five-to-five for the Capitals Eight.
  • A Alex ovechkin The goal was inevitable after the puck fell as the Great Eight definitely had their legs today and their shooting gloves. At the end of the second, the Caps captain already had ten individual shot attempts, six shots on goal, one goal (his 713th) and three individual scoring chances.
  • As president of the Nick jensen fan club I must admit that his association with Zdeno Chara did not pass my eye exam in this game. Chara seemed slow to react to some Devils rushes and Jensen was going to great lengths to cover his partner. You’d think the big Zee could rest back to back, but I guess not.
  • Kudos to NBC Sports Washington for the pre-game stuff they’re doing this season by bringing Bruce boudreau and the old Caps to talk puck before each game. This programming was a lot of fun to watch and as someone who hasn’t watched the pre-game coverage in probably over five years, it got me listening. Alan may stirring the pot and constantly blazing Ian is also always a treat.
  • The Caps went back to being turtles in the third one and I would really like them to stop this trend. They had a single five-on-five shot attempt for about 12 minutes of the third.
  • Ilya SamsonovThe return of Washington’s cage has been difficult. The first goal against was a tough change of pace, but you still don’t want to see him beat the short-side like that. The second goal against just can’t happen. He seemed to settle down and had a great third period on the way to victory.
  • This penalty calls Tom wilson in the third was a complete joke. “Slashing”, by the way. The arbiter called him as if he had just discovered life on Jupiter too.

The Caps have a few days off before two in a row against the Boston Bruins as the two teams face off atop the NHL East Division. Two great games.
