Samsung has announced four new Galaxy S phones at its Unpacked event, marking the tenth anniversary of its flagship range of Galaxy devices. The Galaxy S10e, S10, S10 Plus and S10 5G are full of features and slightly redefine what should be a first-rate device.
After recycling its design last year in the S9, Samsung has happily updated the appearance of the Galaxy S10 line for 2019 – even if it's just a little bit. The four telephones are still made of metal and glass, but introduce a somewhat new form for the metal structure and the glass panels. Samsung has also slightly changed the choice of colors so that more people can find the right deal. More importantly, Samsung has updated all interns to offer the best possible experience.

Samsung Galaxy S10 is available in four sizes
In order to broaden the appeal and affordability of the Galaxy S10 series, Samsung has developed four versions. The S10 and S10 Plus are the main variants and reflect what we have seen in the past. The only differences between the two are the size, the weight, the size of the screen and the capacity of the battery. As before, the S10 Plus has an additional camera compared to the S10.
The S10e is not outdone.
New this year, the S10e, a slightly smaller model and slightly more affordable. It is quite compact compared to the S10, drops the curved glass facade for flat glass and adjusts the size of the battery and memory. However, the S10e is not left out. It has the same rear cameras, the same processor and the same high-speed wireless capabilities as the larger versions at S10.
Then there is the S10 5G. We have not used it yet, but this device is the biggest of the group. It has a larger screen (6.7 inches) than even the S10 Plus and contains a larger battery (4500 mAh) to meet the power requirements of the 5G radio. While the S10e, S10 and S10 Plus will arrive in stores in a few weeks, the S10 5G will not be launched until the second quarter. He will first reach Verizon, followed by AT & T, Sprint and T-Mobile. No word on the markets for variant 5G outside the United States
Dynamic OLED impresses
The screen is the main feature of the S10 series. Samsung has developed a new panel called Dynamic OLED with a perforated design for user-oriented cameras. The company claims to have developed a technique to cut the screen with a laser without damaging the pixels. Samsung calls this the Infinity-O screen. The hole punch design allows Samsung to push the screen as close to the edges as possible, giving a 93.1% screen-to-body ratio that simply dazzles. The phones have a thin chin under the screen, but the rest almost touches the sides.
The display of punch holes is less aggravating than a notch.
Yes, there is a black dot in the upper right corner of the screen, but I found it a lot less annoying than a Google Pixel 3 XL screen.
The S10e and S10 have a circular hole punch, while the S10 Plus has an oval for both front cameras. The oval shape is only slightly more visible than the others. Other sensors, such as the proximity sensor, which turns off the display when you hold the phone against your ear, are buried behind the screen.
Samsung's OLEDs have always had slightly oversaturated colors. This is true with these latest phones, although the contrast has improved by leaps and bounds. Blacks are incredibly black. Samsung offers many ways to change the display settings so that users can set their preferences, such as reducing eye fatigue, blue light filters, color profiles, and more. The sharpness is superb on all phones, even on the smallest screen Full HD + S10e. The Quad HD + screens of the S10 and S10 Plus look amazing. Always as bold, Samsung expects its screens are ranked among the best in the world.
The S10, S10 Plus and S10 5G have an ultrasonic fingerprint reader under the glass. It measures the 3D outlines of your finger through the glass to identify the owner and unlock the device. Samsung showed us how easy it was to use and how fast it could unlock phones. The player has no impact on the appearance of the screen, although Samsung admits that some third-party screen protectors may not be compatible with the fingerprint reader at ultrasound. The fingerprint is stored locally in the secure Knox module of the phone. The phones also feature a powerful facial recognition function using the front camera.
The screens are respectively 5.8, 6.1, 6.4 and 6.7 inches. I'm happy that Samsung is stuck with a 19: 9 aspect ratio. It's not as extreme as 21: 9, as we're starting to see on other flagship devices.
These are excellent screens and will likely be rented by the industry.
Mettle and Sass
The Galaxy S8 and S9 series feature precision-cut metal frames and finely carved glass. The S10 dulls these elements a bit. The aluminum frame is thicker and the glass is slightly less curved at the edges. Samsung did not explain the reason for this design change. In fact, Samsung did not really talk about design.
Unfortunately, the changes make the S10 a bit more generic than its predecessors. The S10 is instantly nice, but also a little forgotten. It is difficult to create modern slabs and Samsung has gone as far as possible without turning the Galaxy S into a niche product. The most obvious "feature" is the hole in the display. However, the smoother shape is more comfortable. I found the phones easier to manage and use. The size will be relative to each person, but even the big S10 Plus did not feel overly huge. It's big, yes, but I've seen bigger. The surfaces of Gorilla Glass 6 are slippery, but the quality makes up for it. There is no doubt about the strength of the frame. The phones also have IP68 protection against dirt and water.
The headphone jacks are (always) included.
The three phones feature a volume rocker and a dedicated Bixby button on the left edge. The buttons are located a little higher, which makes them harder to find quickly. Buttons offer an excellent answer. The S10 and S10 Plus models each have a power / display button on the right side. It is also a little higher than we would like. The phones come with USB-C ports, 3.5mm headphone jacks and trays for expandable memory.
The S10e is the weakest of the group. Save for some aspects like the punched camera, it looks a lot like an iPhone X. The fingerprint reader is the most obvious difference with its siblings. The S10e negotiates the integrated ultrasonic fingerprint reader on the screen against a standard capacitive fingerprint reader located on the right edge of the phone. The drive also serves as the S10e's power button. Although the S10e is smaller than its siblings, it is not much smaller and still looks like a Galaxy phone.
The camera module of all S10 phones is slightly elevated on the rear window. It's a wide window that I would like to see flat. In addition to the camera, the module also houses a heart rate monitor that you can press with your finger for reading. The rest of the back panel is smooth glass.
If we can say something concrete in our Samsung Galaxy S10 is that Samsung has again managed to provide quality equipment, first-rate, that everyone will want.
Point, point, point and shot
You want cameras? The Galaxy S10 has cameras – a lot of cameras. The S10e, S10 and S10 Plus cameras have slightly different layouts. Here are the details.
After Huawei and LG, Samsung has finally adopted the rear triple camera configuration for the S10 and S10 Plus. Each has an ultra-wide, wide, telephoto end-to-back lens that allows the user to select the best zoom level for the desired photo. The ultra wide is a 16MP camera to F / 2.2 with fixed focus; the wide is a 12MP dual pixel camera at F / 1.5 and F / 2.4 with auto focus; and the telephoto lens is a 12MP OIS camera at F / 2.4. Users will not have to worry about selecting different lenses when shooting. Instead, they simply zoom in or out as usual and the S10 will transparently select the right lens for the job.
The S10e drops the telephoto lens and has a dual camera board. This means that the photos will be based on digital zoom rather than optical zoom.
The front camera of the three phones is a 10MP two-pixel f / 1.9 autofocus shooting game. Only the S10 Plus adds a 8 MP depth camera in front to f / 2.2. This is to support the selfie bokeh / portrait mode. Yes, the S10 Plus is the ideal Samsung for high quality selfies. This will surely help you win on Instagram.
Samsung is relying on the image signal processor and Snapdragon 855 neural processing unit to optimize the performance of approximately 30 different scenes and offer suggestions throughout the process. The camera can recognize hundreds of objects and adjusts as needed depending on the subject. This has become a fairly common tool on flagship phones, but the 855 pushes things from one generation to the next. Will the 855 and Samsung's camera technology allow it to compete with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro? We will know it soon enough.
Phones can record 4K videos in HDR10 + format.
The application of the camera looked clean and smooth. Samsung seems to have reduced the clutter. The advanced tools are still there, hiding in the menus and settings. The most important modes, such as portrait and night modes, are right under your finger. Night mode is similar to Google Pixel 3, taking multiple exposures and merging them for a brighter, sharper final image. The samples they showed us were impressive, but we reserve our judgment after taking the phone for a test.
Phones can record 4K videos in HDR10 + format. This is the best resolution and range of colors possible from a phone. The camera oriented to the user can also record 4K. Few phones do that. These are powers that we can not wait to test.
Samsung Galaxy S10 marries a user interface, for better or for worse
The S10 series uses Android 9 Pie and will be the first Samsung device to come with its new unique UI. Samsung has been testing its new user interface for six months and has already integrated it into older Galaxy phones as a system update.
The basic concept is to reduce the complexity of the user interface, especially in the menu structure. In this regard, Samsung is half successful. However, I appreciate more fonts and revised colors than the menu architecture flattened. A user interface looks cleaner, more modern and easier to learn for newcomers to the Galaxy family. It's still Samsung-y.
Samsung has spent surprisingly little time talking about One UI. During the time we spent with the phones we did not see any performance issues, but we'll know more when we finish our full review of the Samsung Galaxy S10.
Price and availability
Samsung's S Series is generally on sale in March, and this year is no different, with the exception of the previously mentioned Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. The Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus will be open for pre-order on February 21st and should arrive in stores on March 8th.
Prices for the Galaxy S10e start at $ 749. Samsung presents the S10e as a more affordable entry point for the Galaxy S series, but do not call it a low-budget phone.
The price of the Galaxy S10 starts at $ 899 and that of the Galaxy S10 Plus at $ 999. We also do not have details on the price of the S10 5G.
