It’s been three years, but Samsung is finally back on top. That’s right: In Q3 2020, the Korean electronics giant sold more phones than any other US company, knocking Apple down from the top.
According to Strategy Analytics data published in The Korea Herald, Samsung captured 33.7% of the US smartphone market between July and September.
In the same period, Apple had to settle for a disappointing 30.2% share and a silver medal. Finally, LG took the bronze medal with 14.7% – which surprised me. I had absolutely no idea LG was making such big moves in the US, but it received a lot of press coverage with its wild designs, like its Wing:
Would I buy one? God no. But am I happy that LG’s batshit moves are bearing fruit? You’re totally right.
Either way, back to Samsung knocking Apple off the US mobile perch. It is speculated that this is due to strong sales of its low-budget devices, as well as relatively successful launches of its high-end devices.
Before we start rolling out the champagne, celebrating Samsung, and condemning Apple, we also need to take this news on Q3 2020 U.S. phone sales with a rather heavy pinch of salt.
First, it is literally just a three month period in one of the most troubled years in living memory. Second – and arguably more important – Apple has had to move its regular September launch date for its new devices to October due to supply chain issues related to the pandemic.
This means that the increase in sales that you would normally expect from Apple during this period has been pushed back to Q4 2020. To put it another way: I would be very surprised if, as Christmas approaches, Apple did. not. Don’t slap Samsung and jump on its lying frame for good measure.
Despite all of this, it is definitely interesting and proof that Apple is far from being the only dominant force in the US telephone market.
