Samsung files brand name for new Galaxy Note 21 feature

By moving the technology needed for a front-facing camera, including the lens, below the screen, phone makers will be able to get rid of a notch, punch-hole camera, and even a pop-up camera. The trademark application mentions that UPC stands for Under Panel Camera and even states that we should see the technology offered on TV screens in addition to smartphone screens.

Last week Samsung released a video to mark the launch of the Consumer Electronics Show 2021. The video Samsung posted discussing the company’s recycling program showed a phone that has yet to be unveiled by the manufacturer. This handset did not have any punch holes or openings that could be used for a front camera. Some believe this phone is the Samsung Galaxy Note 21. Without a hole for the selfie snapper, the video could tell us that Sammy’s flagship line in the second half of 2021 will use UPC technology.

Samsung isn’t the only phone maker to have an under-screen camera system. In fact, the The ZTE Axon 20 5G was the first to bring such a feature to market. Last week a The Huawei design patent for an under-screen camera was posted online after it was filed with China’s National Intellectual Property Office.
