  • Samsung Galaxy S21 owners have discovered that the phone still does not support Android seamless updates.
  • You will need to restart your phone whenever there is a system upgrade.
  • It’s unclear why Samsung hasn’t embraced the technology.

Don’t expect to quietly update your Galaxy S21 in the background while you move on to other tasks. 9to5Google, Brandon lee and others have found that the new Samsung phone series does not support Android’s seamless updates despite hints that Google may require the functionality from Android 11.

Samsung’s omission of seamless updates will let you install Galaxy S21 fixes the old-fashioned way, i.e. restarting your phone and leaving it unusable for a few minutes at a time. It might seem archaic, especially when Google first introduced a seamless update to Android 7.0 Nougat in 2016.

The company hasn’t explained why it isn’t using seamless updates with the Galaxy S21. We asked Samsung if it could elaborate.

Storage can play a role. Android’s seamless updates consume around 3GB of storage due to partitioning – Samsung may be reluctant to nibble on that space, especially when the Galaxy S21 family doesn’t offer microSD card support. The downside can be worth it if it frees up valuable space for your apps and media.

This does not prevent Samsung from introducing seamless updates in the future. We wouldn’t count on it, however, and it won’t be surprising that a change only occurs when that 3GB of space becomes insignificant for many users. For now, you’ll need to find something else to do while your Galaxy device installs the fixes – and time those upgrades accordingly.
