Samsung Galaxy S22 appears on Geekbench

Leaks on the The Samsung Galaxy S22 flagship has flown left and right over the past couple of weeks, and in typical modern day flagship fashion, it will remain no mystery when the announcement is made.

We already have the The model numbers of the Galaxy S22 series, as well as the ISOCELL GN5 50MP camera sensor potentially present in the Galaxy S22 and S22 +. Then there were leaks regarding the Galaxy S22 series battery capacity, and now we have yet another sneaky tidbit on the actual performance of Samsung’s next flagship.

The Geekbench list was unearthed by 91mobiles and contains valuable information. For starters, it shows a Galaxy S22 equipped with Snapdragon (model number SM-S901U), running the Snapdragon 895 chipset with an Adreno 730 GPU on board.

The successor to the Snapdragon 888 is codenamed Taro and is said to be made using a 4nm process. The guys at 91mobiles suggest that the U in the model number means the unit is for the US market.

Looking at the information from Geekbench, we spot the value of 6.82 GB of RAM, which means that the Galaxy S22 will be equipped with 8 GB of RAM. There is a mention of the Android version – it’s unsurprisingly Android 12 out of the box.

Now, looking at the test result itself, it is clear that we are talking about the Snapdragon 895 (or the Snapdragon 898, it could be the same). The SoC consists of three clusters: a fast 3.00 GHz core, 3 cores of 2.50 GHz and 4 efficient cores of 1.79. Pretty much the standard setup of the latest Snapdragon platforms.

Another leak from XDA Developers suggests that the upcoming Snapdragon 898/895 processor will feature three processor core designs in a 1 x 3 x 4 configuration – one Cortex-X2 architecture, three Cortex-A710s, and four Cortex-A510 ARMv9 architectures. Geekbench information pretty much confirms this.

For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S21 with its Snapdragon 888 managed to score 1,043 in the single-core test and 3,090 in the multi-core. There is a huge difference in performance, not in favor of the new chipset.

There are a few considerations here – first, this is almost certainly a pre-release unit, which needs to be further optimized and tweaked. Second, the Geekbench test may have been run in battery saving mode, which dramatically reduces performance.

There was another Geekbench result of the Snapdragon 898/895 (from a Vivo phone with model number V2102A) circulating in the online space, showing scores of 720 and 1919 in single and multi-core respectively, which further complicates matters.

Our opinion

This Geekbench result looks a bit sketchy – it lists the ARMv8 architecture while the new Snapdragon is expected to be based on the ARM v9 design announced earlier this year.

There are several possible scenarios. It’s possible the Snapdragon 895 will use the old design, while v9 has been delayed for a few months and will show its face in the “plus” version of the SoC.

On the other hand, Geekbench might not recognize the new v9 architecture without a software update and just list the unknown entity as v8. Either way, we’re pretty sure about the Adreno 730 GPU. The Samsung Galaxy S22 series is expected to be officially announced in Q1 2022 (likely in the February-March window). We expect the price differential to vary between $ 800 and $ 900 for the regular Galaxy S22, $ 1,000 to $ 1,100 for the Galaxy S22 +, and finally, $ 1,200 to $ 1,400 for the Galaxy S22. Ultra.
