Samsung has promised to roll out more affordable foldable phones this year. His first step in that direction includes a phone you may know.
The phone maker launched this week by slashing the price of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G by $ 250, which brings the cost of Samsung’s flip phone down to $ 1,199. This is the lowest price Samsung has ever set for a foldable device.
More importantly, this is also the same price Samsung charges for the new Galaxy S21 Ultra, the centerpiece of the new Galaxy S21 range. Not that you should ever mistake a $ 1,200 handset for a budget device, but the Galaxy Z Flip 5G’s price cut is clearly a step towards Samsung in making its foldable devices more affordable.
To that end, as part of an ongoing promotion, you can save up to $ 1000 on your Galaxy Z Flip 5G when you trade in your current phone. Normally Samsung offers a trade-in for $ 450 on discounts.
Galaxy Z Flip 5G: what you need to know
The Galaxy Z Flip debuted a year ago, and it was the first foldable Samsung to arrive fully polished. The handset took the design of the flip phone of yesteryear and added a 6.7-inch foldable screen reinforced by the addition of an ultra-thin layer of glass. This gave the Z Flip a sense of durability that had escaped previous Flip models.
The Z Flip also had a strong hinge that allowed you to open the phone to different positions, activating a feature called Flex Mode.
When you open your Z Flip at a 90-degree angle, you can split the screen in some apps to handle different functions – a viewing area for YouTube, for example, augmented with an area where you can control playback and add comments. The feature has proven to be so successful that Samsung has adapted Flex Mode for the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
In announcing the new $ 1,199 price for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, Samsung also touted some of the special features it has built into its foldable flip phone. These include multitasking, which lets you run two apps at once on the Z Flip’s main screen, as well as the ability to use the phone’s 1.1-inch outer screen as a viewfinder for selfies. .
Additionally, by double-tapping the Z Flip’s home button, you can activate one-handed mode, which collapses what is displayed so you can reach it with one hand.
Galaxy Z Flip 5G: should you buy it?
The Galaxy Z Flip 5G is certainly a more tempting option these days than it was at $ 1,449. But there are a few things to consider before grinding that “Buy” button.
For starters, price drops like this usually indicate that a company is hoping to get rid of inventory before new products are released. And we’ve heard rumors that Samsung has a Galaxy Z Flip sequel in the works. While there is no immediate deadline for this phone’s release, rumors are also spreading about the Galaxy Z Fold 3, a new version of the Samsung foldable that could arrive as early as May, if not in the second half. of this year.
Samsung has made no secret of its desire to manufacture more foldables. Samsung Electronics President TM Roh said at the end of 2020 that the company sees “growing momentum” in its foldable business and is committed to maintaining that in the New Year.
“We will be expanding our portfolio of foldable products, so that this revolutionary category is more accessible to everyone,” Roh said at the time.
It remains to be seen whether a cheaper Galaxy Z Flip ticks the box for more affordable foldable products or whether Samsung has even cheaper devices. Other reports claim that Samsung’s efforts include roll-up and slide-out phones in addition to foldable ones, so it’s likely we haven’t heard from the phone maker’s latest on that front.
