Samsung launches mass production of 12GB LPDDR4X for smartphones

Samsung announced last Wednesday to have launched the volume production of LPDDR4X-4266 12GB memory for high-end smartphones. The chip is currently the highest density DRAM for mobile applications. The first smartphone to use Samsung's 12GB LPDDR4X DRAM package will be the company's own Galaxy S10 + phone, officially announced last month.

Samsung's 12GB LPDDR4X Enclosure Integrates Six 16Gb Memory Devices With 4266 MT / s to 1.1 Volts Data Rate and Second Generation Process Technology , of "class 10 nm" (also called 1y-nm). The 12GB memory module has a height of 1.1mm, which is a bit higher than standard LPDDR4X quad-die boxes (which have a thickness less than 1mm), but Samsung has managed to integrate this device to his latest high-end smartphone.

Samsung's 16GB LPDDR4X devices have been in mass production for more than six months now, so it was only a matter of time before Samsung put together a 12GB package for smartphones using these chips. However, integrating six 16GB LPDDR4X memory devices into a single package was not easy.

Standard LPDDR4 / LPDDR4X modules use one, two, or four memory devices (for simplicity, we will use Synopsys terminology here). Standard "one or two-matrix" packages contain one or two x32 DRAM devices with two independent x16 data buses per array. There are also "byte-mode packages" because they use chips connected via two x8 data buses to the host memory controller. Finally, there are "mixed mode packages" containing DRAM units that are accessed differently in different ranks.

Samsung's 12GB LPDDR4X is one of the first LPDDR4X MMP products on the market to deliver a maximum memory bandwidth of 34.1 GB / s. The package uses a dual-rank topology with x8 and x16 data buses. Samsung calls this mode "mixed" byte and not byte.

Traditionally, DRAM manufacturers announce the start of mass production after shipping the first batch of devices to a customer. Given that Samsung introduced its Galaxy S10 + last month and that the phone is about to produce a large volume output, it is not surprising that the company's 12 GB LPDDR4X packages have already been provided. It should be noted that Samsung promises to increase production of 8 and 12GB LPDDR4X enclosures in the second half to meet "anticipated strong demand."
