Samsung teases announcement of upcoming Exynos SoC

Samsung released a brief teaser this morning on its next-generation Exynos SoC. Dubbed “Exynos is Back,” Samsung reveals that there will be an appropriate announcement for the new SoC on January 12, which falls on the first full day of CES.

Since this is a teaser, all details are missing. But it should be noted that Samsung promises “A brand new Exynos is coming”. Which, hopefully, is a sign that Samsung has spent the past two years working hard to improve its future designs.

While the more recent high-end Exynos models (e.g. Exynos 990) have been decent, they have been eclipsed by rival designs from Qualcomm – not to mention market-leading parts from Apple. The latest iterations of the chip have used Samsung’s internal processor core design, which has never performed as well as Samsung had hoped, both in terms of overall performance and ahead of Arm’s licensed designs. .

Fittingly, Samsung has previously confirmed that it will use Arm’s cores (again) in future designs, especially the Cortex-X1, Arm’s big push to double overall processor performance. So it’s pretty much guaranteed that Cortex-X1 will appear in Samsung’s next-gen SoC – especially if they want to compete with the next-gen Snapdragon equipped with Qualcomm’s X1.

Either way, we’ll have more on that in a few weeks, when Samsung makes its announcement. So stay tuned.
