In September of last year, ZTE unveiled the world’s first phone with an underscreen camera. While the ZTE Axon 20 5G is currently the only phone with an under-display selfie camera, the technology is expected to become slightly more mainstream by the end of this year. Samsung, which has been working on sub-screen camera technology for a long time, is rumored to be launching its first sub-screen camera phone this year as well.
While Samsung has yet to detail its underscreen camera technology, Samsung Display today posted a video on Weibo, teasing its new OLED panels with underscreen selfie cameras. However, Samsung Display’s new sub-display technology is not intended for use in smartphones. It will first be on the notebooks.
As can be seen in the video above, Samsung’s sub-screen camera technology will allow laptops to have nearly bezel-less displays with a 93% screen-to-body ratio. The panel is also incredibly thin at just 1mm and weighs 130g. Samsung Display has yet to share more details on the technology, so it’s unclear whether the first laptops with Samsung’s “Blade Bezel” displays will arrive later this year.
