Samsung TV Plus is free and you can now watch it on the web and via Chromecasts

Have you ever heard of Samsung TV Plus? I won’t blame you if you didn’t, because neither did I until recently. Maybe it’s because I’m a Pixel user at heart and don’t really like Samsung products, but that’s a topic for another day. Regardless, the company’s free global TV streaming service, which was previously only available on Samsung TVs and phones, is now widely available through the web. It can also be sent to your non-Samsung big screen TV via Google Cast, so if you have a Chromecast Ultra or a Chromecast with Google TV, that’s great news!

Samsung TV Plus offers instant access to news, sports, entertainment and more and has apparently become one of the fastest growing streaming services in the world right under my nose. It was launched in 2015, and since then it has spread to 23 countries (most recently India a few months ago) and has over 1,000 channels worldwide!

For those who tire of Youtube TV prices or the constant subscription costs to other providers, Samsung TV Plus is completely free – no subscription fees, no credit card, – nothing. Obviously, the company is hoping to attract new users and connect them to its hardware and software ecosystem, but there’s nothing wrong with that I guess. What I like is that the service has a range of channels separated by category, and you can browse the list with just one click to find something of interest.

Again, I don’t have any Samsung hardware other than a Chromebook, and if you don’t have one either, this seems like a great option to check out its offerings without a buy it now. I will say, however, that upon signing up I immediately received three separate emails from Samsung regarding rewards and the like so it doesn’t waste time trying to get you onboard. Samsung says it will continue to expand its ability to compete with other streaming services, so I also wouldn’t be surprised if TV Plus did earn a subscription cost at some point, although I’m not sure if. this goes against its mission or reason for the creation of the service (global availability, accessibility, etc.).

Truth be told, Samsung is such a big company that they have their own army, so they probably don’t need to charge for TV service – all their money comes from hardware, etc. So far, it’s racked up billions of streaming minutes every month, so we’ll see where that goes. To get started, all you need to do is visit the Samsung TV Plus website and sign in with your Google account or create a separate login!

It’s a shame that Samsung, of all people, didn’t set up the proper favicon options for the site properly, so Chromebook owners who want to make it a shortcut to access it as a web app won’t get not, but a standard block icon with an “S” on it – yuck. For now, I’m guessing this service will follow in the footsteps of free web TV services alongside Pluto and Crackle, but let me know in the comments if you’re ready to give it a try!
