Samsung’s additional RAM feature is coming to more phones, both mid-range and flagship

The Galaxy A52s 5G has a lot going for it, and when we reviewed it last month, we found that it was hiding a new feature called RAM Plus. RAM Plus expands the amount of random access memory available on the phone by using 4 GB of on-board storage as virtual memory, in the same way that Windows allocates a certain amount of disk storage to be used as virtual RAM when physical memory is exhausted .

We were wondering at the time if RAM Plus would come to more Galaxy devices, and it looks like it will. RAM Plus was recently included in a software update for the Galaxy A52 5G, and while we believed it would only be available on the company’s mid-range and budget phones, it’s not the case. Even the Galaxy Z Fold 3 with its 12 GB of RAM now has this feature.

It wasn’t there on the Z Fold 3 initially and appears to have been introduced with a recent software update, so we can assume that Samsung will eventually bring virtual RAM to other high-end and flagship phones, such as the Galaxy S21 series, at one point. The beta of Android 12 and One UI 4.0 for the Galaxy S21 line does not include RAM Plus, but it could appear in future updates.

Not that RAM Plus is needed on phones with a lot of RAM, or even otherwise. Android generally avoids letting a device’s memory run out by removing background apps and services when necessary, and Samsung and other OEMs are tuning the process to be even more aggressive, we are. so almost sure that RAM Plus will not be of much use. And for those who are wondering, no, RAM Plus is not customizable. You only get 4GB of virtual memory – there’s no option to change that or turn off the feature.

You can check if RAM Plus is available on your Galaxy device by opening the Settings app, going to the Battery and ddevice care submenu and pressing Memory.
