Samsung’s bigger and more expandable OLED display technology is creepy and cool

In the wake of LG’s “Real Folding Window” showcase, Samsung is taking the opportunity to shine with a new expandable OLED display demo.

At this week’s Global Tech Korea 2021, Samsung showcased an impressive 13-inch OLED panel that appears to stretch to varying degrees. The panel displayed a lava flow video as different sections moved up and down as if to mimic the lava flow, adding another level of 3D immersion to the content.

According to Changhee Lee, executive vice president of Samsung Display, the degree to which expandable screens could be distorted “was around 5% in the past, but now it has improved significantly,” suggesting the company is considering using this technology. in future products like rollable smartphones and more (via ETNews).

This isn’t the first time that Samsung has showcased impressive display technology aimed at future form factors. Earlier this year, the company showcased a video showcasing display concepts such as a sliding smartphone, a screen that folds into two parts, and foldable tablets. The company also showcased an earlier concept of its expandable display technology in 2017, though the panel is smaller at 9.1 inches.

Samsung has already proven that it is up to the challenge of making smartphones with foldable screens more mainstream with improvements to recent devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 3. It is certainly no exaggeration to imagine Samsung adopting this. point of view beyond its best foldable phones.

That said, it may be a while before we see screens like this in the hands of consumers, but it’s a good look at what we might expect in future devices.
