It's finally happening. Samsung aims to make SSDs as affordable as hard drives with its latest range of 860 SSD QVO.
The Samsung 1TB 860 QVO SSD drive will only cost $ 149 (about £ 120, AU $ 210), which brings it closer to the price of the $ 99 WD Black 1TB hard drive. Of course, there is still a price gap, but the Samsung 860 QVO operates at much faster read and write speeds of 550 MB / s and 520 MB / s, respectively.
Compare that with the fastest hard drives, such as those with fast-spin 10,000-rpm trays like the now-extinct WD VelociRaptor series. They reach about 200 MB / s in sequential reading and writing speeds.
Samsung has managed to bring solid state storage to levels never before achieved by using a 4-bit high-density multi-level NAND flash architecture. This form of memory can essentially store more data in its substrate and is less expensive to manufacture by Samsung. The 860 QVO is also equipped with an MJX controller and intelligent Intelligent TurboWrite technology to enable its fast transfer speeds.
The Samsung 860 QVO SSD Series is available now with 1 TB models starting at $ 149 (approximately £ 120, AU 210). The 2TB version costs $ 249 (about £ 200, AU $ 350) and $ 499 (about £ 390, AU 690) for 4TB.
