You have to love a phone that can take a beating. Samsung has made a few of them, from the Galaxy Active series to the more recent Xcover Field Pro. The latter caused a stir with its hefty price tag and older software, but an updated Xcover 5 was leaked in a software update schedule earlier today. A few hours later, photos and specifications are available.

German site WinFuture.de features photos of the front and back of the phone, as well as a collection of unconfirmed specs. It’s a rather modest model: the 5 in the name refers to its 5.3-inch 720p display, which is practically tiny by modern standards. Its Exynos 850 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, plus a MicroSD card slot, won’t turn heads either. The single 16 MP rear camera will not be at the top of any DXOmark list.

On the flip side, its combination of low price and sturdy hardware could make it a hit for anyone who’s tired of paying for screen repairs. The Xcover 5 would be rated IP68 and 810G compliant, making it dust-proof and resistant to water immersion up to one meter. There’s no word on impact resistance, but the 9.2mm-thick phone body appears to have more than the usual amount of padding. Gorilla Glass 6 isn’t as rugged as the new Victus, but it’s way better than what you’d expect on a budget phone; the Pixel 4a uses for example GG3.

Winfuture reports the estimated price at € 290-300, which would be around $ 350 in the United States. Perhaps more importantly (and a good contrast to the Xcover Field Pro), it runs Android 11 out of the gate and would qualify for Samsung’s promise to update its phones for four years. The indicators point to an imminent launch, but the territories in which Samsung wants to sell the phone are to be guessed.
