Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi could draw attention ahead of the NFL Draft. However, it was not always so.
Coming out of Atascocita High School, the Texas native was undersized and underrated. A three-star rookie by 247 Sports, Cosmi was ranked the country’s 135th attacking tackle. In a state known for its high school football, he was only ranked as the 195th best player in Texas. Thinking back on his career in high school, however, it’s hard to see why.

As a junior in 2015, Cosmi is credited with 56 pancake blocks and 31 knockdown blocks. He allowed just two sacks on 476 attempted passes. As Atascocita reached the 6A Division I quarterfinal, Cosmi was part of an offensive line that helped the offense average 44 points per game.
Atascocita did better in 2016, reaching the semi-final of 6A Division I. As a senior, Cosmi allowed no sacks on 445 attempts as well as 66 pancake blocks recorded with 40 knockdowns. As a result, he was recognized with All-State 6A second team honors.
Only four programs offered Cosmi a college football scholarship. After originally enlisting in Houston, he reversed his pledge to follow coach Tom Herman at the University of Texas.
The Samuel Cosmi entering the 2021 NFL Draft isn’t the same undersized offensive tackle that arrived in Texas. Coming out of Atascocita, he weighed just 260 pounds in a 6’7 ” frame. In order to cope with the rigors of college football, he put on a red shirt in 2017. During that year, away from the pitch, Cosmi added more than 40 pounds.
After a year on the sidelines, Cosmi made his debut against Maryland in 2018. After an impressive performance, he would start the rest of the season with the right tackle for the Longhorns. Within two years, he went from undersized and under-recruited to earning freshman honors.
In his sophomore in 2019, Cosmi went from right-to-left tackling, exhibiting valuable versatility. He started all 13 games, winning second-team All-Big 12 honors as a quarterback Sam ehlinger threw the second-most yardage in Texas history. Cosmi himself made history on the program, scolding for a touchdown against West Virginia.
After the 2019 season, Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi courted the NFL draft. However, he is adamant that the plan was still to return for his junior season. After allowing the quarterback a single hit, a loss tackle and a sack in eight games, Cosmi declared for the 2021 NFL Draft. He ended his career in Texas winning First Team Big 12 honors.
Samuel Cosmi’s NFL Draft Profile Analysis
Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi is one of the most experienced and versatile linemen in the 2021 NFL Draft. He has started 34 career games for the Longhorns. The majority of his starts were in the left tackle, but 13 of them came in the right tackle.
Although he plans to play left tackle in the NFL, there’s no reason he couldn’t start right tackle immediately for a team before heading to protect the blind side once he honed his craft in the NFL.
As well as being versatile and experienced, Cosmi can be one of the sportiest offensive tackles in this class.
This manifests itself in two ways. First, he shows excellent athleticism to reach the second level in the running game. Second, his athleticism shows in passing protection that he can quickly recover from his mistakes to make sure he isn’t beaten.
At 6’7, “Cosmi has a great height for the attacking tackle position. However, it is not only its size, but also its length, which makes it an attractive proposition. Small defensive ends will have a hard time beating him as he uses his long arms to easily keep them at bay.
Finally, Cosmi shows incredible football intelligence on the pitch. He demonstrates a good understanding of angles, putting himself in a winning position either in passing protection or blocking in the running game.
What are the potential concerns with Samuel Cosmi?
Despite his versatility and experience, Samuel Cosmi will be concerned ahead of the NFL Draft. He often relies on his athleticism rather than technical sophistication to win. This is something that will be more difficult to do in the NFL. He has to work on hand placement and timing as he often seems too slow to get a hold of his man.
The downside of being a 6’7 ″ offensive tackle is that you naturally play with a high pad level. While Cosmi’s previous wrestling experience means he has a good understanding of leverage, he should be mindful of leaving his chest exposed.
Despite showing a few good reps where he’ll crush his man to the ground, there are some reps you’d like to see him a little more aggressive to finish the job. However, this is of minor concern for an otherwise impressive prospect.
Samuel Cosmi’s best games in the 2021 NFL draft
This upcoming class is full of offensive tackling talent. Behind Oregon According to Sewell, it’s a choice of your poison preference among a number of prospects. Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi is expected to be included among the candidates for a first-round selection in the NFL Draft, as several teams have needs for the position.
I see teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Green Bay Packers picking late in the first round as potential destinations. However, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Jacksonville Jaguars approach the position with the second of their first-round picks.
Despite the buzz of the first round, in his last big table for Pro Football Network Tony Pauline gives Samuel Cosmi a second round rating in this NFL Draft class. He is Pauline’s 64th overall prospect and 10th ranked offensive tackle.
