Despite the initial successes of their starting rotation, rumors have run that the San Diego Padres would be looking for another starting pitcher in free or commercial mode. Today, they may have found a way to redeem potential Padres player Matt Wisler from the Cincinnati Reds.
Wisler had 26 debuts with the San Antonio (AA) missions in 2015 when the Padres traded it to the Atlanta Braves as part of the deal to acquire Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton Jr.
He spent more than 3 seasons with the League of Braves before becoming part of a commercial program to acquire Adam Duvall. As a member of the Cincinnati Reds, Wisler played in eleven games and worked exclusively with the pen.
For his career, Wisler is 16-23 and EER 5.14. He posted an average of 3.75 points for the Reds in spring training this season and has not yet started in the MLB this year.
In exchange for Wisler, the Padres abandoned Diomar Lopez. Lopez made a strong ERA pass to the low-A ball last year, but was unable to reply to either A-ball (18.80 ERA) or the high-A ball (9.90 ERA). He has a minimal chance of reaching the big leagues club.
At this point, it's unclear whether the Padres will try to add Wisler to their paddock, spin or start on El Paso.
UPDATE: He goes to the office.
