The San Diego Padres have agreed to a deal to acquire right-hander Joe Musgrove from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Musgrove’s business is pending medical examination, the sources say, and will refer a large number of prospects to Hackers. Well-known center-back Hudson Head is expected to be part of the squad heading to Pittsburgh.

Musgrove, 28, was 1-5 with an ERA of 3.86 in eight starts for the Pirates in the 2020 season shortened by the coronavirus pandemic.

Musgrove, the team’s opening day starter in 2020, is expected to earn $ 4.45 million in 2021 after he and the Pirates agreed to a contract last Friday to avoid arbitration.

He’s 29-38 with a 4.33 ERA in 108 appearances in five major league seasons, including 83 starts.

Musgrove is the third starting pitcher acquired by trade by the Padres this offseason. Last month, San Diego acquired left-hander Blake Snell and right-hander Yu Darvish in separate hit deals with the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs.

This is the second major trade for the Rebuilding Pirates, who traded first baseman Josh Bell to the Washington Nationals last month.
