SANTA CLARA – The 49ers just lost 28-21 to the Seattle Seahawks and are now in last place in the NFC West with a 2-2 record. Here are the 49ers’ ratings for this performance.
QUARTERS: D.
Jimmy Garoppolo started well with his first 6 throws. But he injured his calf and made only 8 of his next 17 throws and did not play in the second half. Afterward, he bit back tears, saying he hopes he will only be missing a few weeks. I’m thinking of Garoppolo, but the 49ers should put him on the bench for the rest of the season. He is the past. The Garoppolo era in Santa Clara is over.
Trey Lance needs as much experience as possible because right now he’s so poorly trained on the intricacies of the quarterback role it’s hard to watch. When he replaced Garoppolo, Lance relied 100% on his athletic ability and playing field instincts, and he was sometimes effective playing that way because he is such an athletic playmaker. But the 49ers haven’t improved one aspect of Lance’s game from a passing perspective since joining the team, and that’s Kyle Shanahan. More on him below.
TURNERS: A.
Trey Sermon ran for 89 yards and an average of 4.7 yards per carry. He was never the problem with the 49ers’ racing game – blocking was the problem, and he got better in this game.
WIDE RECEIVERS: A.
Deebo Samuel is the best offensive player. Today he had 8 catches for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns. He’s gone at a Jerry-Rice-esque pace this season. However, none of the other wide receptors made an impact.
TIGHT ENDS: C.
George Kittle suffered a calf injury and struggled – he only caught 4 of 11 targets and only gained 40 yards. But his replacement, Ross Dwelley, caught a nice 21-yard touchdown pass from Garoppolo. It was the only pass Dwelley received in the entire game. It is shameful not to involve him more.
OFFENSIVE LINE: B.
Alex Mack has improved tremendously from last week, unlike Daniel Brunskill – he’s still terrible. But collectively, this group has been very successful in blocking in the running game. Unfortunately for the 49ers, Trent Williams left the game with a shoulder injury. It’s not good.
DEFENSIVE LINE: A.
They put Russell Wilson under pressure for most of the game and also stopped the race well. Good rebound performance from a defensive line dominated by Green Bay last week.
LINEBACKERS: LESS
Fred Warner did a great job stopping the race, as did Azeez Al-Shaair, although he also gave up a touchdown. Overall, the top seven played pretty well.
SECURITIES: A-LESS. Jimmie Ward allowed a touchdown on the goal line but otherwise did a good job, as did his counterpart Jaquiski Tartt. It’s a cohesive and solid duo.
CORNER CORNERS: D.
The 49ers have committed eight pass interference penalties in four games – all-time high in the NFL. Today, alternate cornerback Dr. Kirkpatrick committed one, which is to be expected. The 49ers try to win games with corners collected at the bus station. Not easy.
SPECIAL TEAMS: F.
Robbie Gould injured his groin during warm-ups and did not play. His replacement, Mitch Wishnowsky, missed a field goal and an extra point. And kick returner Trenton Cannon fumbled twice on the same kick return, and the Seahawks recovered deep inside 49ers territory. Who knows, the 49ers might have won this game if Cannon hadn’t made that mistake.
COACHES: D.
DeMeco Ryans did a solid job with the backup cornerbacks the 49ers provided him. He managed to limit the Seahawks’ offense to a tiny 4.3 yards per play, which is impressive.
But Ryans is just a footnote. Shanahan is the main story here. He faced a Seahawks team that had no first downs and under 11 net yards after 25 minutes of the game and still lost. Which means Shanahan has lost 9 of his last 10 home games. And now his record for wins and losses as a head coach is 31-37. Next week, after losing to the Arizona Cardinals, it will be 31-38.
It is becoming increasingly clear that Shanahan is not a good head coach – he makes erratic decisions that cost his team victories. But it’s also becoming clear that he’s not a good quarterback developer either. None of his quarterbacks of the past five years have ever improved. And now Lance looks like a complete novice.
That’s what happens, Kyle, when you, as the head coach and offensive coordinator, haven’t adequately prepared your # 2 quarterback in training camp, preseason and regular season. Everyone knew Jimmy Garoppolo is not good enough and would get injured this season – the fact that he has lasted 3.5 games is progress for him. The transition to Lance was inevitable, and yet Shanahan didn’t prepare for it.
Which means Shanahan is in the hot seat. Or it should be. If the 49ers miss the playoffs, and they could, they should fire Shanahan.
No more excuses.
