SANTA CLARA, Calif .– Already sidelined by a sprained ankle, San Francisco 49ers cornerback K’Waun Williams will miss at least the next two games after the NFL suspended him on Tuesday for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing substances.

The first Williams can return from the two-game suspension is Tuesday, Dec.8, after the Niners played the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.

Jamar Taylor handled the slot wedge duties in Williams’ absence. Williams is expected to be an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Williams, who when in good health serves as the team’s main nickel wedge, has only played six games this season as he suffered from hip, knee and ankle injuries. He sustained a sprained ankle in a loss to the Green Bay Packers on November 5, has not played since and, even before the suspension, had no plans to return in the next few weeks.

While Williams will be out for at least the next two weeks, the 49ers hope to recover reinforcements from the injured reserve soon. The team opened the 21-day training window for running backs Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. on Tuesday, meaning they could return as early as Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Mostert and Wilson were on the reserve injured with major ankle sprains; Mostert performed in a Week 6 win over the Rams, and Wilson came a week later against the New England Patriots.

The 49ers also signed safety Chris Edwards to the active roster on Tuesday. Edwards offers additional depth after the Niners placed solid safeties Jaquiski Tartt and Johnathan Cyprien on the injured reserve in recent weeks.
