49ers won’t lose vice president of player personnel Adam Peters, but they will losing vice president of player personnel Martin Mayhew to the Washington football team by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.
Mayhew’s role in Washington is unknown, but he will not take over as general manager as the team is in the process of hiring Marty Hurney for the role.
With Hurney going to win the GM title, Mayhew’s departure means the 49ers won’t be rewarded with a third-round compensatory draft pick. The expanded Rooney rule requires minority applicants to be hired to fill head coach and general manager positions to receive those additional draft picks.
Athletic’s Matt Barrows wrote that San Francisco expects no compensation.
Mayhew joined the 49ers front office in 2017 as a senior staff executive. He was promoted to vice president of player personnel ahead of the 2019 season. Prior to coming to San Francisco, Mayhew worked for a year at the New York Giants front office. Previously, he was with the Detroit Lions for 15 seasons, including seven as general manager.
