San Francisco 49ers move up to NFL Draft, acquire Miami Dolphins third pick, sources say

The San Francisco 49ers acquired the No.3 pick in this year’s NFL Draft from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for the No.12 overall pick and third-round pick in 2021 as well as first-round picks in 2022 and 2023, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday.

The move puts the 49ers squarely in the mix to draft a top quarterback, but sources told ESPN that San Francisco has Jimmy Garoppolo and has no plans to trade him.

The 49ers chose to trade because they’re good with options that will be at No.3 after picks by the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets, sources told ESPN.

The No.3 pick was acquired by Miami as part of the deal that sent Laremy Tunsil to the Houston Texans. As a result of that deal, the Dolphins have now secured Noah Igbinoghene, Solomon Kindley, No. 12, No. 36, and No. 102 picks in 2021 as well as first-round picks in 2022 and 2023.

Miami now has picks at 12, 18, 36, 50, 81, 102 in the first three rounds of this year’s draft. The third-round pick from the 49ers to the Dolphins is a compensatory choice for the hiring of Robert Saleh.

Cameron Wolfe of ESPN contributed to this report.
