San Francisco 49ers put TE George Kittle on injury list

The San Francisco 49ers have placed George Kittle in the injured reserve, ruling out the tight end for at least three games due to his calf injury.

Kittle has been playing despite the injury since he suffered it in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. But he hasn’t been in practice all week and had been viewed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals before the transfer from the IR.

It’s another major change for the 49ers’ offense, which will start rookie Trey Lance at quarterback for the first time with Jimmy Garoppolo also with a calf injury.

Kittle, a two-time Pro Bowler, ranks second out of the 49ers with 19 receptions and 227 yards this season.

This is the third year in a row that Kittle has run out of time due to injuries. He missed two games in 2019 with a knee injury and eight games last season with knee and foot injuries.

San Francisco activated Nate Sudfeld from the practice squad for Sunday’s game to serve as Lance’s replacement. Tight end Tanner Hudson was also elevated to the active roster for the game.

The Niners promoted wide receiver Travis Benjamin from the practice squad to take Kittle’s place on the active roster.

ESPN’s Nick Wagoner and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
