San Francisco 49ers set to look into free agent RG Gabe Jackson

The Las Vegas Raiders may be giving the 49ers a chance to solidify the top of their right guard depth chart. Josina Anderson reported on Wednesday that the Raiders are expected to release RG Gabe Jackson after seven years with the club.

Performance did not drive the start. Jackson was set to earn $ 9.6 million next season and his contract left no money dead in Vegas to part with him.

In fact, Jackson played really well for a strong Raiders attacking front last year and started all 16 games. The previous two years he started all 24 games he played. An elbow injury limited him to 13 games in 2018, and a preseason knee injury kept him at 11 games the following year.

While the 49ers didn’t invest much in RG’s place during Kyle Shanahan’s tenure, that was already a problem enough last year that they could end up spending some of their limited resources to attract a reliable player capable of playing the role of a starter and allowing players like Daniel Brunskill to work as a reserve. This would improve the starting point and improve their depth, which suffered badly last year as injuries piled up.

It would be a start from the norm for San Francisco, but kicking the tires on an available starting RG like Jackson could help secure an offensive line that needs strengthening.
