San Francisco bans smoking tobacco in apartments

Smokers in Golden Gate City have been banned from smoking tobacco in their apartments, but smoking a pot of marijuana indoors is perfectly acceptable, officials said on Tuesday.

The Supervisory Board approved the new law by a 10-1 vote, making San Francisco the largest city in the country to pass the tough tobacco smokers measure, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Lawmakers originally proposed to ban the use of marijuana in buildings, but they reversed their position after cannabis activists protested that it was the only legal place they could smoke.

Tobacco smokers argued that the new law violated their rights, especially when they lived in their homes. However, officials gave the bill the green light citing issues of passive smoking.

“Second-hand smoke is harmful and everyone should have clean air to breathe where they live” tweeted San Francisco Supervisory Board Chairman Norman Yee.

Smoking has killed more than 480,000 people in the United States each year, including more than 41,000 deaths caused by exposure to secondhand smoke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
