NEW YORK – Buster Posey was out of line for the San Francisco Giants’ 3-2 win over the New York Mets on Wednesday night after leaving a game with left knee discomfort, while Brandon Crawford played the shortstop after feeling tightness in his lower back.
Manager Gabe Kapler said both players were encouraged by the way they were feeling arriving at the park on Wednesday.
Posey, 34, was pulled out in the fifth inning on Tuesday night in an 8-0 victory over the Mets after home plate umpire Greg Gibson told Kapler Posey appeared to be out.
Kapler said the seven-time All-Star is moving well on Wednesday and plans to test his knee in a catcher’s squat during batting practice. Curt Casali had to start on receiver anyway.
“At the moment, that’s just good news,” Kapler said. “But obviously these things take twists and turns, so we’ll be keeping an eye on them.”
Posey enjoyed a year of resurgence after skipping the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season when he and his wife adopted prematurely born twins. The 2012 National League MVP scored and scored in the fourth inning on Tuesday to increase his batting average to 0.314 with 39 RBIs and an OPS of 0.925.
Crawford, 34, struck fifth a day after being relieved in the seventh inning. Kapler said Crawford felt some tension ahead of Tuesday’s game, and with San Francisco blowing New York City, the club knocked him off the hook.
Crawford went 1-for-4 with 2 RBIs in Wednesday’s win, scoring a double go-ahead and two runs in the seventh inning.
