San Francisco on the verge of banning facial-recognition surveillance

San Francisco will likely become the first US city to ban the use of facial recognition by local agencies, increasing pressure to regulate a technology that critics believe can perpetuate police bias and excessive supervisory powers.

The proposed ban is part of an order that proponents and opponents say should be adopted by the city's supervisory board on Tuesday. The order would also require any city agency wishing to purchase a monitoring system to submit it to the board first.
