San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott apologized Friday for a raid on a journalist, claiming that it was probably not legal while he was calling for an independent investigation.
The officers "should have done a better job," Scott said in an interview with the San Fransisco Chronicle.
"I'm sorry that has happened. I am sorry for the people of San Francisco. I am sorry for the mayor. We must fix it. We know that the investigation has raised some concerns and we need to address the problem, "he added.
The police chief told the newspaper that he was "concerned" that search warrants for the home and office of independent videographer Bryan Carmody had not sufficiently recognized him as a journalist.
Scott told the newspaper that an independent body would conduct an internal affairs investigation, which could lead to the discipline of the agents. He noted that the police will not use the evidence of the raid.
Police raided Carmody's home while she was investigating the release of a report containing unflattering information about public defender Jeff Adachi prior to his death.
Scott's apology is a reversal of his previous defense of the raid. He said on Tuesday that the police presumed that Carmody had plotted to steal a police report, which Carmody denied.
A week earlier, Scott had said, "We followed the judicial process and the appropriate legal process for a criminal investigation."
