San Francisco public defender Jeff Adachi, hailed as one of the advocates of criminal justice reform, dies of a heart attack at age 59

"Public defenders may not represent the people, but we defend real people every day," Adachi wrote. "Elected public defenders, who are not bothered by a mayor or a board of trustees, become watchdogs against police misconduct and prosecution and justice system reformers, ensuring that he also works for everyone.
